Bluebird Tea Co. Advent Calendar — Day 1 — Gingerbread Chai tea bag



Hurrah for a strong opener — welcome to Gingerbread Chai!



Ingredients: rooibos, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, mallow flowers, flavour

We have our Nordic neighbours to thank for the tradition of gingerbread. Every year the town of Bergen, Norway still build a lifesize gingerbread city to celebrate Christmas. What a nightmare for poor old Hansel and Gretel! Let's hope they are keeping a low profile and enjoying a steaming cup of our Gingerbread Chai instead!

If you’ve read my other posts you will recall that it was the same friend (she really is amazing — thanks Quincy) buying me a Gingerbread Chai Christmas bauble last year that got me back into serious tea drinking when I fell so in love with this amazing rooibos blend that 10 teabags just wasn’t enough. Once I had visited the site to buy more I was lost and have spent all year buying their astonishing collection of blends, most of which I have still to review.

This wonderful tea has the classic red rooibos colour and smells and tastes just like Christmas. It is full of ginger and spice and is everything you would hope a gingerbread tea would taste like, and because it's caffeine-free you can drink it all day and night (and I do, often). As always I think it tastes better with a spoonful of demerara as it develops the sweetness of the gingerbread more.

I understand that this award-winning tea makes an amazing latte too. I haven’t tried it yet but I do have a recipe for it (you can find it here) and I see it uses honey as a sweetener.   

Quincy also gave me a Moz the Monster mug full of chocolate coins, so I now have a new tea mug for the season.

So, tea that smells like weeds – I honestly can’t stand the stuff. Favourite Tea League Table (Updated 12 August 2017)

I thought it might be useful if I keep a league table of my top 10 favourite teas, going forward. This list reflects the favourites of those I've drunk recently rather than all-time favourites as I've discovered its very difficult to have an all time list when I'm trying so many different teas and what I like is affected by the weather or the time of year.  For instance, over Christmas and through the winter I drank enough Gingerbread Chai to sink a battleship (is that a thing?) and I would definitely have said it was my all time favourite tea. But at the moment I have no interest in drinking it at all because it seems to me that its the wrong time of year for it and so it's dropped from the top of the charts completely off the list. It will definitely be back by Christmas, though, that I can guarantee. Blue Raspberry Tea – Bluebird Tea Co.

Today’s tea is one of the  Bluebird Tea Co. 's newest permanent offerings, Blue Raspberry . It started life as a limited edition but was recently voted back by a landslide and so now everyone can enjoy it forever. Ingredients: Chinese sencha green tea, blue pea flowers, freeze-dried raspberry pieces, natural flavouring They describe it thus: The magical butterfly blue pea flower turns your cuppa a bright blue colour, naturally! This pretty plant is full of antioxidants and our addition of raspberries + green tea makes this a health boosting brew indeed! Mixologist tip off - try adding a squeeze of lemon and see the colour change!  The first thing to say about this tea is that it really is very pretty.
